Gender, discrimination and diversity in the world of sports

The course introduces central theories and debates in gender and diversity studies, through a thematic focus on sport. The course explores themes such as heteronormativity and homophobia, racism and sexism, discrimination and colonisation, equality, inclusion and diversity. The course provides insights into how the world of sport shapes and mirrors gendered ideals, roles and relations, and that these are mutually constructed with ideas about race, sexuality and (dis)ability. The course introduces central theories on gender, racism and discrimination, and provides a critical perspective on the role of sport as an arena for promoting equality and integration. The aim of the course is to provide knowledge about sport as a sociocultural phenomenon where questions of equality, discrimination and diversity are expressed and challenged.

Students who complete this course will acquire knowledge of

• foundational humanities and social scientific theories about gender, racialisation and discrimination
• the role of sport as a social arena for equality and diversity
• the intersectional interplay between gender, sexuality and race

Students who complete this course will be able to

• apply theoretical concepts and perspectives to discuss gender and racialisation in modern sports
• recognise political and theoretical positions in current debates about gender, equality and diversity
• apply an intersectional perspective to questions of equality and diversity

The teaching and learning for this course will consist of lectures, and activity based learning. The learning activities will be participatory and rely on classroom discussion and group activities. There will be two compulsory written assignments, both of which must be completed before admission to the examination. There will be a home-based examination.
