Building Conservation

In Norwegian cultural heritage management, building conservation is a central theme. It is therefore necessary with knowledge of building history, knowledge of collecting and creating information about buildings and insight into relevant challenges in building conservation. Through varied activities, the course aims at giving a basic theoretical and practical introduction to building conservation.

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate

• has basic knowledge of conservation theory applied on building conservation
• has basic knowledge of building history in Norway and of the history of building conservation
• has basic knowledge of terminology on buildings and construction as part of their skills to acquire services from experts

Skills

The candidate

• has basic skills in building measuring and evaluating building conditions
• has basic skills in collecting and assemble information about buildings
• has the ability to execute a larger project based on group work
• is able to produce a written report on building documentation and discuss related cultural heritage issues.

Lectures, seminars, excursions and field work. The course is based on one theoretical and one practical part, and most of the course is concentrated in the second half of the semester. In order to deliver the final assignment in this course, three obligatory assignments must be approved. Active participation is required to accomplish the course.
