Early European Art

The course will cover European and/or Norwegian visual arts or medieval or early-modern architecture (until the 17th century). The teaching is based on one or more art historical periods (medieval, renaissance, baroque), or possibly the reception of elderly art in early modern times. Through the examination of different types of works, the student will get an introduction to current theory and methodology. Aspects related to art such as heritage, protection or dissemination may also be highlighted.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student should have:

• in-depth knowledge of an art-historical period and its historical context
• good understanding of the application of current academic concepts, such as protection, cultural heritage or dissemination
• good knowledge of current theory and method
• a higher level of knowledge on subjects related to the formation, culture, reception of art, art and identity or Western civilization where applicable

Skills

After completing the course, the student will:

• be able to discuss art from a given era in European art history in an autonomous and independent way
• demonstrate an ability for independent discussion of works in light of their historical context
• be able to determine and apply relevant scientific methodology
• be able to provide an independent and critical presentation of the subject matter in writing and orally

Lectures, seminars and compulsory assignments. Excursions can also be included in the instruction.
