Exhibition in Context

The course introduces the student to different exhibition models and their institutional background. In which ways is a subject matter presented in visual form and how can we understand the museum as a background for the exhibition and further, how can we understand exhibitions as expressions of, say, a city or a nation's self-understanding? This regards exhibitions in museums of art history, cultural history, and art galleries. The course thus touches on exhibition ideas, aesthetics and how exhibitions convey content, and it presents theoretical perspectives for analysis.

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will have:

• thorough knowledge about the institutional background of exhibitions
• detailed knowledge about the hallmarks of research-based exhibitions
• good acquaintance with different exhibition models

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will know how to:

• conduct a detailed analysis of an exhibition in its context
• communicate this knowledge in oral and written form

Seminars, excursions and compulsory assignments.
