Theme with excursion: Gjenstandsfortellinger

The course topic will vary according to the excursion, which usually has a European country as destination. Most of the teaching will take place during the excursion and will thus be linked to galleries, art historical monuments or urban environment. In some cases activities include practical work in collaboration with museums and collections. In addition to the main excursion the course may also include visits to local destinations. "Gjenstandsfortellinger" has been developed in close collaboration with the University Museum at NTNU. Selected sections of the museum's medieval art collection will be presented in a web exhibition. Students at KUH3201 will develop this exhibition through independent object related studies, examinations of source material, and writing of short texts in different scientific genres (exhibition text, blog, etc.). The result of this work will be published on the University Museum's website. The course provides work experience and gives a unique insight into museum practice and dissemination. The excursion will probably go to Stockholm, with particular focus on medieval art at Statens Historiska Museum.

Knowledge

After completing the course the student should have:

• knowledge about a given topic of architecture and/or visual art in relation to local, regional and geographical conditions.
• knowledge of the theme's research tradition and literature.
• knowledge of aspects of the exhibition, dissemination and/or reception of works according to the given theme.
• knowledge of relevant methodological and theoretical issues.

Skills

After completing the course the student should be able to:

• independently formulate a problem and designate relevant theory and methodology for the individually selected part of the curriculum.
• show ability of critical thinking and independent reflection.
• be able to present results of study and research both oral and written form.

Lectures and seminars, including guidance in groups and individually. All activities are joint with KUH2201. Compulsory activities: Oral presentation and self-chosen syllabus of approximately 350-400 pages in addition to the obligatory common curriculum of 350-400 pages. The subject of the essay and the self-chosen reading list must be approved at least 3 weeks before the student is eligible for final assessment. Students are required to check the result of their assignments and to stay updated on any information provided by the department or course director via Blackboard. This course is taught in Norwegian only.
