Master's Thesis in Art History

The course contents is dependent upon each individual student's choice of topic for their Master's thesis. The thesis may discuss different kinds of artworks, research and sources. The thesis must be of a mature and precise scholarly nature, with a clear outline of the material. The use of source material must be accounted for, and the thesis must offer a clear chain of argument and brought to a conclusion. The scope of the thesis is between 28.000 - 40.000 words. The word count does not include the front page, preface, table of content, literature or attachments. The number of words must be stated on one of the initial pages, and the student is responsible for its accuracy.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have:

• comprehensive knowledge of a specific field within the discipline of art history
• thorough knowledge of relevant theoretical approaches to the chosen subject
• thorough knowledge of the formal design of a Master's thesis as genre

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will know how to:

• carry out an scholarly exposition and standard outline of the chosen theme
• in a mature and accurate manner provide an individual and scientific discussion of the sources (data/literature/references)
• provide a critical discussion of the chosen sources (references)
• forward questions and hypotheses connected to the projects specific material
• discuss the content towards a plausible conclusion in accordance with a logic disposal of the relevant material
• present and mediate the subject to the audience

General instruction: Seminars and individual supervision.

Writing the thesis under supervision from the individually appointed supervisor. All students must write an abstract of the thesis of approx. 1/2 - 1 page. The abstract should be written in Norwegian and preferably in English.

The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.
