Aesthetics and Politics

The course concentrates on selected aesthetic theories with main emphasis on aesthetics and politics in relation to one another.

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will have:
- Thorough knowledge of selected aesthetic and art theoretical issues since the 18th century.
- Knowledge of important conceptions in the western tradition of the political dimensions of art.
- Knowledge of the influence of institutional frameworks upon the production and reception of art.
- Knowledge of the tensions between the tradition of aesthetic thinking and the idea of art history as a scientific academic discipline.

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will know how to:
- Discuss aesthetic and art theoretical problems in relationship to specific works of art.
- Reflect upon the political significance of artworks.
- Discuss aesthetic ideas and artworks and thereby contribute to current debates on art’s significance.

More on assessment: The final assessment is based on a 10 days take-home examination of about 4000-5000 words, assessed by a letter grade.

Students are required to check the result of their assignments on It's Learning.
