Art Historiography

This course deals with the classics in the history of art, as well as new methods and theories. The course focuses on the social and political dimensions of this research tradition.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will have:

• thorough knowledge of the classics of art history and their attachments to Western academic tradition
• knowledge of the historical development of the conjunction between the idea of art and of scientific professionalism.
• knowledge of important new developments in the field of art history.
• knowledge of how the art history tradition is made relevant today.
• political perspectives based on the academic tradition of art history.

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will know how to:

• conceptualize and explain the essentials of the development of the academic field of art history
• characterize and discuss the relevance of new trends in art history.
• problematize the meaning and relevance to connect to a vocational training today.
• argue for political perspectives on Art History.

Lectures and seminars. The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard. This course is taught in Norwegian only.
