Early European Art

The course will cover European and/or Norwegian visual arts or medieval or early-modern architecture (until the 17th century). The teaching is based on one or more art historical periods (medieval, renaissance, baroque), or possibly the reception of elderly art in early modern times. Through the examination of different types of works, the student will get an introduction to current theory and methodology. Also aspects related to art such as heritage, protection or dissemination may be highlighted.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student has:

• knowledge of an art historical period and its historical context
• knowledge of current professional concepts, such as protection, cultural heritage or dissemination - knowledge of current theory and methodology
• possibly knowledge of topics related to the formation, culture, reception of art, art and identity, Western civilization, etc.

Skills

After completing the course, the student is able to:

• identify and discuss art from a given era in European art history
• discuss a work in light of its historical context
• apply the relevant scientific method
• present the subject in writing and orally

Lectures and seminars. Excursions can also be included in the instruction.

Obligatory assignment: a written assignment must be passed before the final assessment in the course.

The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Canvas.
