Theories on Art and Society: from Plato till the Present

This course deals with major formulations – from antiquity to the present in the Western context – of the significance of beauty and art in society. Can the experience of beauty be helpful in developing “virtue”, freedom and autonomy in humans? The course discusses a selection of texts dealing with the role of pictures and art in understanding man’s situation in the cosmos, in the cultivation of enlightened citizens, and in advancing equality in the modern world.

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of this course, the students will have:
- Insight into and understanding of historically significant formulations about the function and relevance of beauty and art in society.
- Knowledge of the background and effects of such texts

Skills
Upon successful completion of this course, the students will know how to:
- Present historically significant lines of argument on art’s relationship to society
- Reflect on the historical background for present ideas on art’s role in society
- Articulate the course proper orally and in writing

Lectures and seminars.

Obligatory written or oral seminar presentation.

The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.
