Modern and Contemporary Art and Architecture

The course deals with issues related to art, architecture, and visual media in the 20th and 21st century. Students will receive academic specialization within a given topic in modern and contemporary art, and gain insight into theories and methods that are relevant to the topic.

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will have:
- knowledge of central parts of Western art and architecture of the modern and postmodern period.
- Knowledge of the development of modern art and architecture
- Knowledge of the concepts modernity and modernism, and of paradigmatic interpretations of these concepts.
- Knowledge of theory of architecture and design in the modern period.
- Knowledge of the relationship between canonical and group specific approaches to art.

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will know how to:
- Identify and develop upon important parts of modern and postmodern art and architecture.
- Discuss the relevance of interpretative conventions when it comes to approaching modern and postmodern works.
- Critically use concepts such as modernism, postmodernism and contemporary art.
- Interpret modern and postmodern works in relation to society.

Lectures and seminars. Excursions might also be arranged.

Course requirements:
In order to receive the final assessment in KUH2008 the student must
hold an oral presentation over his/her selected problem of research for a term paper.

More on assessment: The final assessment is based on a individual term paper. The scope of the text should be between 6000-7000 words. The students will recieve instruction, individually or/and in a group.
The curriculum for the term paper is choosen by the student and should consist of literature that focuses on the thematics of the selected problem of research. At hand in, the bibliography is to include the curriculum, but can also include additional literature. The term paper will be marked with a letter grade.

Students are required to check the result of their assignments on It's Learning.

Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director; either via It's learning or Innsida.
