European Art from 1400 to 1800

The course covers the tradition of classical art in Europe from the Renaissance in the 15th century to Neoclassicism. Economic and cultural expansion characterized the period, and there were extensive trade and exchange with foreign cultures. The development of art, which has different centers, is associated with the church, the princes' court and the bourgeoisie. The course deals with European art during this period and explores how Norwegian art becomes part of this tradition.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student should have:

• basic knowledge of visual art from the Renaissance to Neoclassicism
• knowledge of the connection between changing artistic expressions and currents in society
• understanding of and being able to explain central art historical and theoretical concepts

Skills

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

• conduct a style analysis, and reflect upon where and when a work is produced on the basis of stylistic and iconographic characteristics
• account for and use key artistic and art theoretical concepts used during this period
• place art in a wider cultural-historical context

Assorted teaching methods, such as lectures, seminars and group lessons. There might also be excursion(s).
