About this course
Content
Classification of fluid material models. Flow fenomena for non-newtonian fluids. The basic equations of thermodynamics for fluid flow. Deformation kinematics. Viscometric flow. Tensile flow. Viscometers and rheometers: cylinder-,capillar-parallell-plate and conus-plate-viscometers. Material models: generalized Newton fluid, linear and nonlinear viscoelastic models, viscoplastic models, corrotational models. Granular materials. Application of the models for flow in pipes, capillaries, slits, annuli, converging canals and nozzles. Thin film flow. Extrusion.
Learning outcomes
The students will gain an overview of rheology and non-Newtonian fluid flow, and a deep understanding of rheology with application to their own research. Moreover, they will gain presentation and writing skills that may be of great value to their Ph.D. studies, dissertations, and further career. The students will further learn to learn by applying heutagogical principles in their daily work.
Teaching methods
The course is a tutored self-study based on heutagogical principles, in particular learning by teaching. The students will study and acquire understanding of rheology on three specific topics: the history of rheology, main rheology models, and rheology with application to their own field of research. The three presentations form basis for the term assignment which is a brief compendium "Rheology with application to own reseach".Digital tools are employed throughout the course.
