About this course

Content

The course is given every second year, next time spring 2010.
Colloid chemistry within the oil industry (3 SP)
The course will emphasise the importance of colloid chemistry within offshore oil technology. PVT diagrams, mechanisms for asphaltene precipitation at low pressures (or changing solubility conditions), separation of water/oil/gas, emulsions (occurrence, stabilisation and destabilisation mechanisms of water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions), electrocoalescence, gas hydrates (occurrence, natural transportation and stabilisation of suspensions) and the functionality of oilfield chemicals (inhibitors, deemulgators, kinetic inhibitors, defoamers, wetting agents, etc.) are described in the course.
Lecturers: Professor Johan Sjöblom, NTNU and Dr. NN from oil industry.

Surface and colloid chemistry in papermaking technology (3 Sp)
Interfacial and colloidal phenomena play an important role in papermaking technology. In the course the following applications will be covered: Surface chemistry of wood and cellulose fibres, dissolved and colloidal substances in process liquids, retention, flocculation and dewatering, wet strength additives, ink/paper interactions, foams and defoamers.
Föreläsare: Professor Per Stenius.

Instrumental methods in colloid science (1.5 Sp)
Principles and applications for measuring interfacial phenomena, micelle formation, Langmuir films, surface characterisation and colloidal stability will be presented. Practical demonstrations of selcted techniques will be given.
Lecturer/demonstrations: Associate professor Gisle Øye

Learning outcomes

To provide an understanding of industrial applications of surface and colloid chemistry.
