About this course

Content

The subject is offered every second year, next time spring 2017.
The goal for the course is to give a comprehensive understanding of membrane technology with reference to different membrane materials and the gas transport mechanisms through these, thus the difference in gas separation properties of the membrane materials will be explained , and give the basis for a good choice when membrane separation processes are considered.
The following topics are included: Transport of gases (ideal, non-ideal, polar and non-polar gases) through polymers, inorganic (carbon, glass, ceramics, metal) and hybrid (mixed matrix) membranes; and the influence of sorption, diffusion, adsorption, poresize, pore size distribution, in these materials. Separation of various gas mixtures at varying temperature and pressure. The importance of the material’s chemical structure, the physical properties of the gases, interaction between gases and membrane material, and possible degradation. Examples of environmental friendly membrane processes will be discussed (drying of natural gas, CO2-capture, recovery of VOC, upgrading of biogas, recovery of H2, among others).

Learning outcomes

The student should have basic competence within separation processes and membrane technology. A short introductory course in selelcted topics will be given to those who are missing this background.

Skills:
The student should be able to evaluate which materials which materials are most suitable for membrane separation of various gases, depending on the gas composition and selected process parameters such as temperature and pressure. Further, the student should be able to make qualified choices with respect to the design of the materials, and their suitability for commercial membrane modules.

General competence:
The student should have knowledge about all types of membrane materials which are suitable for gas separation (polymers, inorganic, metals, hybrid organic-inorganic) and be familiar with the principles of how these are prepared.

Teaching methods

Colloquium. selfstudies. Individual report/article (will count for 1/3 of mark).
For students who already have completed the basic course in membrane technology (TKP8) in their master studies, will have to write a comprehensive report - this count for 2/3 of mark.
