About this course
Content
The topic is lectured every second year, next time in the spring semester 2016.
Topics in the course are: - Chemical, physical and thermodynamic relations in manufacturing and characterization of membranes. - Analysis of transport and fouling mechanisms in membranes and membrane modules with special emphasis on membrane crossflow filtration. Design and operation of membrane separation plants. The course may, in agreement with the candidates be supplied with other membrane topics.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
TThe student should have basic competence within separation processes and membrane technology. A short introductory course in selelcted topics will be given to those who are missing this background.
Skills:
The student should be able to evaluate which materials are most suitable for membrane separation/purification of various liquid streams, depending on the liquid composition and selected process parameters such as temperature and pressure. Further, the student should have knowledge about how to minimize any concentration polarization and fouling of the membrane. He/she should also be able to design a suitable membrane separation process for the liquid stream.
General competence:
The student should have knowledge about all types of membrane separation processes which are suitable for liquid separation (MF, UF (electro)dialysis, RO and PRO) and be familiar with the principles of how these membranes are prepared (ceramics, polymers, hybrids).
Teaching methods
Lectures, colloquies, self studies and individual report/article (will count 1/3 of mark).
Students who already have completed the basic course in membrane technology (TKP8) in their master studies, will have to write a comprehensive report - this count for 2/3 of mark.
