Introduction to Media Studies

This course has two main objectives: First, students will learn ways of thinking, writing and reading at university level. Second, they will gain insight into the most important themes, issues and perspectives that characterise the discipline of media studies. Students will develop skills in academic writing and reading through studies of specific media expressions, such as television serials, photographs, websites, and similar.

The course is part of the One-year programme and the Bachelor's programme in Media Studies.

Upon completion of the course students will have:
- knowledge of academic thinking and writing methods focused on the core objects of study and forms of expression in media studies
- knowledge of how to use sources and academic citation systems

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
- use discipline-specific ways of thinking and writing to understand, assess, analyse, and discuss objects and forms of expression appropriate to the discipline of media studies
- use sources correctly in relation to academic systems of reference and citation

Teaching activities include lectures, group tutorials and individual assignments where focus on the objects of study is combined with the practise of reading and writing.


Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director via Blackboard.
