The Medieval Age in European Literature

This course offers a survey of Medieval European literature. Texts are read in one or several languages, normally Latin or Greek, in the original language (classical studies option) or in translation (ancient civilisation option).

The students at this course are expected to meet the following learning objectives, divided into knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

• Students should acquire basic knowledge on the history of Medieval Latin language and literature, and a first introduction to the methods and history of Medieval Latin as a research field and university discipline.

Skills

• Students should acquire more advanced skills of reading, translating and interpreting texts (in critical editions) from the various periods and genres of the Medieval Latin literature,
• be familiar with the central vocabulary of the texts of the syllabus
• perform grammatical, metrical, stylistic or interpretative analyses of these texts (in the original language according to the classical studies' option, in translation according to the ancient civilisation option)
• relate them to their literary, cultural and historical contexts
• basic knowledge of textual criticism (adapted to the original-language option and the ancient civilisation option).

1-2 seminars. Compulsory oral presentation of a chosen text.
