European Literature in Antiquity

This course offers a survey of European literature from antiquity. Latin and/or Greek texts are read and studied either in the original language (classical studies alternative) or in translation (ancient civilisation).

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate is expected to

• have knowledge about ancient poetry, with emphasis either on Greek or Roman lyric
• have knowledge about the lyrical poetry's history (Greek or Roman)

Skills

The candidate is expected to

• be able to read and interpret lyrical poetry (in the original language or in translation)
• be familiar with the vocabulary used in the texts
• be able to give analyses of the texts of the syllabus (in the original language: grammar, syntax and interpretations; in translation: interpretations based on state-of-the-art of research)
• be able to identify the different metres of the texts in the original language
• be able to discuss lyrical poetry in a literary, cultural and historical context
• have basic skills in textual criticism

1-2 seminars. Compulsory oral presentation of a chosen text.
