About this course

Content

The course is lectured every second year in the autumn semester, the next time in autumn 2026. Transition metals are becoming more and more important in modern organic synthesis. This is particulary true for organic transformations which are impossible or difficult to achieve by classic organic chemistry. The important role of organometallic complexes within catalysis will be discussed. The transition metal complexes bonds, structures and reactions will be given. Special emphasis will be put on the application of organometal complexes in organic synthesis. Reactions that involves transition metal complexes of (i) metal hydrides, (ii) metal-carbon sigma-bonds, (iii) metal carbonyls, (iv) metal carbenes (v) metal alkene, diene and dienyl complexes, (vi) metal alkynes, (vii) trihapto-allyl metal complexes and (viii) metal arenes will be presented. The lectures will include recent literature.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge:

(i) Masters the relevant theory, problem formulations and methodologies for use of organometallic compounds in organic synthesis. (ii) Is able to evaluate when it is appropriate to use organometallic compounds in organic synthesis.

Skills:

Can plan and perform organic syntheses at an advanced level.

General competence:

(i) Can perform research at a high international level. (ii) Has knowledge of an enabling technology meeting the needs of society, including the fields of medicinal chemistry and organic electronics.
