Enzyme Chemistry

The course will be taught every other year, next time in 2012. Enzyme catalysis emphasizing enzyme kinetics, reaction mechanisms in enzyme catalysis, metal ions in enzyme catalysis, and the stereoselectivity of enzymes. The term paper is intended to present a review, based on the original literature, of the total understanding of the structure, catalytic mechanism, and possible regulatory mechanism for a particular enzyme, illuminated with data taken from the literature and based on different experimental techniques.

The students are expected to achieve a modern understanding of enzyme catalysis and of the relationship between structure and function of enzyme proteins.

Lectures (4 hours per week) and mandatory term paper.
Required for exam: Approved term paper. English teaching by request. For extraordinary or re-sit examinations, written examination may be changed to oral examination.
