About this course

Content

This course is about teaching and disseminating chemistry in different arenas (school, university, media). The course partly overlaps with PPU4224. The part which is shared by the two courses deals with chemistry teaching in school (in Norway), including teaching methods, curricula, assessment and learning theories. The part which is given exclusively to KJ2090 students aims at training the students in disseminating chemistry orally, in writing, and through experimental work. The students shall acquire knowledge of the experimental nature of chemistry, chemistry in everyday life as well as aspects of the history of chemistry

Learning outcomes

The course will present, consider and discuss various perspectives on chemistry, and intend to increase the students abilities as chemistry disseminators.

The students shall:
- Acquire knowledge of learning theories and a variety of teaching methods and teaching aids and be able to state the reasons for their choice of method in teaching
- Acquire knowledge of typical misconceptions and common challenges in learning chemistry
- Acquire knowledge of aspects of the history of chemistry
- Acquire knowledge of challenges in disseminating chemistry orally, in writing, and through experimental work
- Be able to use a variety of relevant methods in teaching and dissemination of chemistry in school and society
- Be able to plan and conduct experiments in chemistry for different audiences
- Be able to present chemical topics in a precise and pedagogical manner in writing as well as orally
- Be able to give constructive feedback on written, oral and practical dissemination of chemistry
- Be able to reflect on, and improve their teaching and dissemination practice in chemistry, be it orally, in writing, or through practical work
- Be able to get acquainted with, and master a set of practical experiments, and disseminate them in a comprehensible way
- Be able to use the history of chemistry to disseminate a contextualized view of chemistry as a science and how new knowledge in chemistry emerge and is being established

Teaching methods

Lectures, laboratory experiments, presentations, written assignments. For extraordinary or re-sit examinations, written examination may be changed to oral examination.
