About this course
Content
Symmetry operations, point groups and character tables are applied to symmetry adapted linear combination (SALC) of atomic orbitals for polyatomic molecules. Walsh diagrams are used for assessment of bonding and stereo chemistry for p-block compounds. Ligand field theory (MO-theory) for transition metal complexes including pi-interactions. Some organometallic complexes, mainly d-metal carbonyls. The course also includes term symbols and electronic spectra, including ligand-field transitions and selection rules. Introducing application of spectroscopic techniques UV-Vis, PES and XAS. Moreover, the role of functional porous materials (containing d-metals) in sustainable reactions will be discussed.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student is expected to:
- Utilise the various bond theories for explaining stereochemistry and properties of inorganic compounds
- Utilise symmetry, point group and character tables to explain molecular orbital interactions in polyatomic molecules
- Explain electronic spectra of transition metal complexes
- Explain the interaction between CO and d-metal complexes
- Be familiar with the spectroscopic techniques UV-vis, PES and XAS and their applications on transition metal complexes
- Understand the role of functional materials in sustainable applications
Teaching methods
The lessons are based on lectures and exercises, usually two hours of exercises per week and four hours of lectures.
Expected work load in the course is 200-225 hours.
