About this course

Content

How can actual conditions and events be represented in the form of structured data that can be shared and be of information and benefit to many? Database systems are software systems for making available, maintaining and managing access to collections of data. A collection of data managed by one database system is a database. The databases are basic elements in all IT solutions. Without data, there is no information to use - share, interpret, explore or learn from.

Database technology is a prerequisite for utilizing data as a resource. The course deals with data modeling and design theory for relational databases and programming against relational databases.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the participant must have knowledge of:

  • Database systems, general properties and system structure.
  • Data modeling with emphasis on the entity-relationship model (ER model).
  • The relational database model, transition from ER model to database in tabular form, the relational model.
  • Query language: Relational algebra and SQL- Structured Query Language.
  • Data storage, organization of data for fast retrieval and compilation
  • Methods that provide correct execution and safe storage
  • Methods for securing against unauthorized access to and use of data

After completing the course, the participant must have skills in:

  • Data modeling with the entity-relationship model.
  • Realization of relational databases.

After completing the course, the participant must have:

  • Knowledge of applications of database systems and understanding of the benefits and limitations of such systems.
  • Modeling and analytical approach to computer problems.
  • Strategic knowledge about the importance of information infrastructure and data sharing from structured data collections

Teaching methods

Gatherings and web based interactions.

The teaching is given in the form of an alternation between theoretical lectures and practical exercises - individually and in groups. After each session, homework assignments are given that give participants quick and immediate experience in using theoretical insight to solve concrete, realistic example problems. Most of the teaching takes place in English.

Attendance at gatherings is mandatory.

Subject to a sufficient number of applicants for the course to be completed.
