Digital Libraries

The course treats different aspects of web-based digital libraries containing texts as well as multi-media information. Modelling, design, and description of content: general methods, specific methods for selected applications and user groups, such as multimedia information retrieval, and bio-informatics systems. Different models for Information Retrieval systems, WWW search tools, and indexing and retrieval of semi-structured data, e.g., XML. Differendt aspects of evaluation of Digital Libraries will be discussed; technology, content, and usage.

During the course the students will learn through theory and practice how to design and develop systems with collections of multi-media objects. The students will learn about and understand principles, techniques and methods used in advanced information retrieval (IR).
