About this course
Content
Participatory design:
- Background and development; Political, social and ethical consequences of technology; key concepts (tacit knowledge, tool perspective, participation)
- User empowerment as design philosophy; User empowerment in design of technology and services; stakeholder analysis; co-design techniques (personas, scenarios, service blueprints, prototyping, etc.)
- Facilitation of design activities, the role of the facilitator, qualitative analysis of results from participatory design activities; challenges related to participatory design and realization of results
Learning outcomes
The course provides theoretical and practical knowledge on participatory design of digital technologies and related services. The learning outcomes on completion of the course are summarized below.
Knowledge: The student is able to explain the ideology of the design tradition "participatory design".
Skills:
- The student is able to apply participatory methods and techniques in the design of digital solutions and associated services.
- The student is able to plan and manage participatory design activities and processes, and is able to think critically about the design facilitator role.
- The student is able to conduct qualitative analyzes of the results from participatory design activities.
Competence: Through the group activities in the course, the student has gained experience and competence in how participatory design activities and processes can be carried out in an appropriate and reflective manner.
