Introduction to Informatics

The course gives a broad overview of the subject area of informatics, and an introduction to its theoretical basis. The history and development of informatics, how data is stored in binary, data compression and dealing with communication errors are introduced at a basic level. Further, computer architecture and machine languages are elaborated on as well as operating systems and networking with a emphasis on the Internet. Fundamental search algorithms are introduced. The course gives a short introduction to HTML and programming of dynamic web-sites Further material include an introduction to programming languages in general. Relational databases using SQL to retrieve and store data is also a part of the course. The DBMS tool MySQL is used in exercises.
