Learning outcomes

Learning outcome:

After having passed the exam of the subject the student should know the basic concepts and challenges of operationg ships in ice covered waters and harsh environment, such as: Ice management, basic ice mechanics and properties, ship technology and classification for ice covered waters and cold climate, rescue operations and preparedness, navigational, planning and logistic challenges.     



The student should be able to carry out planning of safe operation of ships and constructions in ice covered and cold climate and evaluate the risks involved.     



The student can evaluate risks involved with ship operations in ice covered waters and harsh environment and master terminology in this field, as well as being updated on the academic and research papers in relevant subjects.

Teaching methods

Teaching methods and activities:

The course is given during one week, and is organized with lectures on background topics and an introduction to a case study. The case study will then be solved individually or in groups and documented in a project report. The total workload for the course is expected to be 2 weeks including independent research and literature survey supporting the project work.Grading will be based on the project report, and will assess the candidate(s) ability to interpret, familiarize, reflect and apply the course topics.
