About this course

Content

Strength evaluation; Stress pattern, longitudinal and transverse strength, combination of normal stress and shear stress, equivalent stress, criteria of failure, allowable stress.

Buckling of structures; Column buckling, buckling of plates including biaxial stress and shear.

Ultimate strength of structures; Elasto-plastic capacity analysis of
beams.

Vibration;  Noise and vibration problem in ships, vibration prevention in ship design, boundary condition of hull structural vibration

Fatigue; Simple fatigue analysis of marine structures

Girdersystems; Analysis of simple and complex girder systems and grillages

Design of Fibre-reinforced Composite Structures; Composite structural design, mechanical properties, laminate design, design of single skin panels and stiffened structures and design of sandwich beams and panels.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
After having passed the exam of the subject the student should know the procedure for structural design, the main principles of load transfer in a hull structure, be able to formulate structural static problems and establish required scantlings.

Skills:
The student should be able to carry out rule based structural analyses, also computerbased, verify and interpret the result.

Competence:
The student shall know the various ship types and the structural character of each type. He shall also know relevant rules and standards and design criteria.
