Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

  • After passing the exam the student should know the main principles of different ship machinery systems, including main propulsion, auxiliary systems for main propulsion, cargo handling and ship survival systems.
  • The student shall also know different methodology and tools to perform design analysis using basic laws of mass and energy conservation, stress and reliability analysis, as well as the importance of energy efficiency and environmental technology.
  • The student shall know the basics of the design process going from a specification via schematics to detailed drawings and plans including the process of design approval by authorities and classification societies.

Competence:

  • The student should be able to perform machinery systems design and analysis based on basic engineering laws and framework.
  • The student shall be able to apply basic methods of systems engineering design.

General competence:

  • Ability to approach complex systems, make simplifications and solve sub-systems, as well as keeping the overall requirements and interactions to other sub-systems serving a mission.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, demonstrations in the lab. individual mandatory assignments and exam project work in groups. 75% of the mandatory assignments have to be approved before admission to examination.
