  • Laws, guidelines and regulations for plant design
  • Water chemistry and microbiology
  • Design of mechanical, biological and chemical treatment processes.
  • Microbial/chemical risk analysis in water and wastewater treatment plants
  • Decentralized and source-separated treatment systems.
  • Sludge Management
  • Sensor technologies and modelling techniques for plant monitoring

Learning outcomes

Learning outcome- Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the different microbial and chemical contaminants in water and wastewater streams.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of water and wastewater treatment.
  • Good knowledge of guidelines and regulations for the selection of different water and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Knowledge of the resources in wastewater/sludge and treatment technologies to recycle these resources for the benefit of society.

Learning outcome-Skills

  • Able to use software and tools to assess the health and environmental impacts of water and wastewater systems (e.g., @Risk and GEMSS).
  • Able to apply key theories and principles in the design and selection of appropriate water, and wastewater treatment technologies.
  • Able to independently undertake field and laboratory experiments in the planning and design of water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Able to use digital tools to design, simulate and optimize different water and wastewater treatment processes (e.g. BioWin and WATPRO).
  • Able to write and effectively communicate technical reports.

Learning outcome- General Competence

  • Be able to select, plan and design an appropriate water and wastewater treatment plant for a given locality/community accounting for existing guidelines, regulations and cost implications.
  • Be able to work in an interdisciplinary team in water and wastewater management.
  • Contribute to the development of good water and wastewater treatment practice through participating in discussions within the field.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, fieldwork, labwork and excursion.

Mandatory assignments:

Several individual exercises, lab work as well as a larger group assignment. All mandatory assignments must be approved within given deadlines to gain access to the final exam.
