Content

This course focuses on principles for water and wastewater management within the broader context of sustainable smart cities

Key topics that will be covered include:

  • Water and wastewater challenges for sustainable smart cities
  • Concept of smart water in the context of a smart city
  • Key microbial and chemical contaminants of concern in water and wastewater systems
  • Key water and wastewater treatment processes
  • Fundamental Hydraulics and urban hydrologic analysis using Python.
  • Sensor technologies for Smart Water Systems for a) water quality monitoring b) wastewater treatment plants, c) water distribution systems and d) wastewater/stormwater collection.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcome - Knowledge

  • Knowledge of challenges for water and wastewater for sustainable smart cities
  • Knowledge of the key principles underpinning smart water in the context of smart cities.
  • Knowledge of key chemical and microbial contaminants of concern.
  • Knowledge of basic treatment processes in water and wastewater treatment plants;
  • Knowledge of key hydraulic and hydrological principles in the design of drinking water pipes, wastewater collection systems and stormwater systems
  • Knowledge of sensor technologies and their applications in water and wastewater infrastructure

Learning outcome - Skills

  • Ability to conduct basic laboratory analysis of physical and chemical parameters of water and wastewater.
  • Ability to analyze data from laboratory analysis and write reports.
  • Ability to choose between different drinking water sources and treatment methods for a given drinking water.
  • Ability to choose an appropriate method for wastewater treatment based on treatment requirements.
  • Ability to undertake fundamental hydraulic and hydrologic analysis using both hand calculation and Python.
  • Ability to distinguish between different sensors applications for water and wastewater infrastructure

Learning outcome- Competence

  • Be able to present results both orally and in writing.
  • Be able to master the key principles and terminologies
  • Be able to communicate with other professionals.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, fieldwork, labwork and excursion. Several individual exercises, lab work as well as a larger group assignment. All mandatory assignments must be approved within given deadlines to gain access to the final exam.
