Content
Basics of computer networks
The topics covered could include, but are not limited, to:
- Data link and physical layer (e.g. Ethernet)
- Network layer (e.g. IP, ICMP, routing)
- Network addressing (e.g. IP addressing)
- Transport layer (e.g. TCP, UDP)
- Application layer (e.g. HTTP, SMTP, DNS)
- Switching (VLANs)
- Routing Concepts and protocols (e.g. RIP, OSPF, EIGRP)
- Access Control Lists (ACL)
- Network services (e.g. DHCP, NAT)
- LAN Redundancy (e.g. STP)
- Link Aggregation (e.g. EtherChannel)
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
-The candidate possesses thorough knowledge of models, services and protocols in data communication networks.
-The candidate is capable of applying his/her knowledge in the field of data networks.
Skills:
-The candidate knows relevant methods and terminology in the area of data communications.
-The candidate is capable of performing basic network administration tasks.
General competence:
-The candidate is capable of working independently and in groups in the field of data communication.
-The candidate is capable of designing, analyzing, and performing maintenance on basic computer networks.
Objectives:
After completion of the course, the students:
-Will have knowledge of the most used standards and protocols for data communication.
-Will understand the basic principles of computer networks.

Coursework requirements:
- The mandatory assignments must be approved before the candidate will be permitted to take the final examination.
-Laboratory work in Gjøvik is mandatory.
