About this course

Content

In this course, the work with complex electronic systems is continued from the previous Engineering Project courses, where students work on a large-scale project throughout the semester. The project builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired during the first two semesters, with a focus on consolidating, expanding, and applying the previously introduced concepts in a mature manner. The work involves iterative development and testing of solutions, emphasizing the integration of various technologies, robustness, and design principles for user-centered systems. Students work in teams and gain experience in planning, executing, and evaluating large-scale projects.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

The candidate shall understand:

  • Core principles for the integration of complex electronic systems, including robustness, scalability, and efficient resource utilization.
  • The use of advanced development tools and methods for software and prototype development in professional environments.
  • The benefits and challenges of iterative development in projects with high complexity, including how methods such as Agile, Scrum, and design thinking facilitate structured problem-solving and continuous improvements.
  • How iterative development ensures high quality through systematic testing, feedback, and adaptation, and how these methods enable agile handling of changing requirements and unforeseen challenges in complex development projects.

Skills

The candidate shall be able to:

  • Develop and optimize electronic systems by integrating multiple technologies, platforms, and interfaces.
  • Migrate from Arduino C to pure C to leverage the capabilities of professional development environments and tools, applying this in practical projects.
  • Plan, execute, and document the entire development cycle of a semester project, including testing, iterative improvement, and presenting completed solutions.
  • Implement collaboration and version control methods in team projects, using modern tools such as GitHub or equivalents for project management.

General Competence

The candidate shall:

  • Be capable of independently solving both expected and unexpected challenges arising during project work by utilizing available resources and guidance.
  • Collaborate effectively in teams to manage complex projects, including responsible task allocation, coordination, and communication.
  • Reflect on their own and their team’s learning processes, identify areas for improvement, and implement measures to enhance working methods.
  • Present results and solutions professionally, both through clear, precise reports and through well-structured oral presentations.

Teaching methods

Project work in groups. Dialogue-based learning methods combined with lectures. Guest mentors and one or more excursions. Selected assignments with submissions.
