About this course
Content
In this course, you will learn that all types of electromagnetic energy conversion are based on electromagnetic induction. The main principles of electromechanical systems, in particular, and electromagnetic systems, in general, will be covered.
There are many electromagnetic devices based on these principles. It includes important electrical machines such as synchronous machines, PM machines and asynchronous machines used in generators and motors. In addition transformers are covered.
Problems used in the course are intended to strengthen understanding of the phenomena and interactions in electromechanics and electromagnetic energy conversion and include examples from current research.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
After completing the course, the candidate will:
- know the electromagnetic laws used to calculate central quantities such as magnetomotive force, magnetic flux, reluctance, induced voltage, force and torque
- know how to apply magnetic circuits
- know how the various types of machines work
- know the mathematical models to calculate currents, torque, losses, parameter values, etc.
- have good knowledge about the main design principles
Skills:
After completing the course, the candidate will be able to
- carry out simple design tasks (select machine for defined application)
- analyze electrical machines in relevant steady-state operational situations
- select instrumentation and carry out measurements on electrical machines under different (steady-state) operating conditions, both in laboratory and in field work
- reflect on ethics and sustainability connected to electrical machines
- to a significant degree evaluate AI-generated material about electrical machines
General competence:
After completing the course, the candidate has increased:
- skills in cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration
- ability to communicate effectively to professionals and non-specialists alike, for instance through reports and presentations
Teaching methods
Lectures, compulsory exercises and laboratory work.
Al least 75 % of maximum 12 compulsory exercises in the course must be delivered before given deadlines and be approved to get access to the exam. The exact number of compulsory exercises are announced in the learning platform at the startup of the course. It is mandatory to do all the three laboratory exercises in the course.
To write a report or give an oral presentation connected to one of the laboratory exercises within a given deadline might be required. If so this report or the oral presentation must be approved to get access to the exam. Also here information will be given in the learning platform at the startup of the course.
