About this course

Content

A simulator system may contain a wide range of components, such as simulation model, computer graphics, and human interaction. These different components have to communicate with one another in the desired way. For example, in a real-time simulation system:
• The rendering of the computer graphics should never slow down the actual simulation.
• It is essential that the architecture of the software is designed properly, such that no undesired artifacts occur.
• The components should be correctly synchronized.
• The system should be maintainable and extensible.
• The software components should have low coupling and ability to run in a distributed environment, using parallel computing.

The course covers the following topics:
• Basic concepts, roles, standards.
• Functional Architecture - design, analysis, models, implementations, testing.
• Examples of (industrial) software architecture.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
Know the process from design to implementation of software architecture for Sim&Vis applications.
Skills:
Be able to design software architecture for Sim&Vis applications.
Be able to implement software architecture for basic Sim&Vis applications.
General Competence:
General concepts, standards, and industrial practice on software architecture for Sim&Vis applications.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises and project assignments. Grading will be based on the project report.
