About this course

Content

Attention will be paid to how organisational, economical and political factors influence participation in Physical Education, sport and physical activity. Important topics to be discussed are among other things how to understand Physical Education, sport and physical activity in organised, non-organised and commercial forms. Attention will also be given to the understanding of socialisation into and in sport, and the importance of Physical education and sport as a health related issue.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge – the student shall:
* achieve a basic introduction to the questions tied to Physical Education and Sport from social sciences perspectives, concepts and analytical methods.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:
* apply knowledge of physical education, sport and physical activity as a social phenomenon and its meaning for identity formation, health and social community.

Teaching methods

Throughout the semester there are 4 hours of lectures/practical activities, and 2 hours of group discussion per week, apart from the weeks reserved for writing the compulsory term paper. The term paper is written individually or in groups of up to 3 students on a topic from the lectures. Tutoring is available for the term paper. Form of assessment is a home exam. The course is reserved for students admitted to the one-year programme in Physical Education and Sport.
