About this course

Content

Water and wastewater treatment challenges. Chemical and microbial contaminants in water and wastewater streams. Laws, regulations and discharge permits in Norway and EU. Reactor hydraulic and kinetic theory in the design of treatment steps in water and wastewater treatment plants. Mechanical, biological and chemical treatment processes for water and wastewater. Process simulation and optimization in water and wastewater treatment. Decentralized water and wastewater treatment systems. Planning and design of on-site wastewater treatment systems including source-separating systems. Sludge treatment methods. Wastewater and sludge reuse. Risk modelling in water and wastewater systems.

Learning outcomes

Learning Outcome - Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the national and international challenges in water and wastewater treatment. - Knowledge of the different microbial and chemical contaminants in water and wastewater streams. - Knowledge of the impacts of water and wastewater treatment. - Good knowledge of the local, national and international laws, regulations and guidelines that drive the selection of different water and wastewater treatment  processes. - Knowledge of the key principles, concepts andtheories that underpin water and wastewater treatment design processes. - Knowledge of the resources in wastewater/sludge and treatment technologies to recycle these resources for the benefit of society.
Learning Outcome - Skills: - Able to use software and tools to assess the health and environmental impacts of water and wastewater systems (e.g. @Risk). - Able to independently undertake field and laboratory experiments in the planning and design of conventional and decentralized water and wastewater treatment plants. - Able to apply key theories and principles in the design and selection of appropriate water and wastewater treatment technologies for a given location. - Able to use modern software and tools to design, simulate and optimize different water and wastewater treatment processes (e.g.SOLIDWORKS, STOAT and WATPRO). - Able to design treatment systems for flood water management in the built environment and along roads. - Able to write and effectively communicate technical reports.
Learning Outcome - General competence: - Be able to select, plan and design an appropriate water and wastewater treatment plant for a given locality/community accounting for existing guidelines, regulations and cost implications. - Be able to work in an interdisciplinary team in water and wastewater management. - Contribute to the development of good water and wastewater treatment practice through participation in discussions within the field.
