About this course

Content

Water pipenetwork. - Hydraulic principles of pipeflow. - Pipenetwork analysis. - General principles of pipenetwork synthesis. - Water transmission lines (Gravity, pumping mains & pumping stages). - Water distribution mains (Gravity and pumped sustained distribution mains). -
Branched and looped pipenetwork systems. - Evaluation and rehabilitation of pipe networks.
Wastewater collection system. - Steady flow hydraulics. - Unsteady gravity flow hydraulics. - Force main, pumping hydraulics and pump stations. - Wastewater collection system design, modelling and calibration. - Regulatory issues in sewer network design. - Evaluation and rehabilitation of wastewater collection systems.
Stormwater collection system. - Wastewater collection system hydrology. -
Rainfall data modeling. - Modelling runoff. - Determining hydrographs from runoff volumes. - Empirical methods for generating hydrographs. -
Snowmelt. - Modelling and simulation of urban storm water events. -
Conventional and nature-based systems for stormwater management.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcome - Knowledge: - Have a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the hydraulic principles and methods in the design of water, wastewater and stormwater pipe networks. - Have a thorough knowledge on different tools and softwares used in the planning, design and rehabilitation of water and wastewater pipe-networks. - Have a good knowledge of the tools and softwares used in the design of stormwater collection systems. - Have a good knowledge of the conventional and nature-based systems for stormwater management. - Have thorough knowledge on different sources of information to aid the design of pipenetworks.
Learning outcome - Skills: - Able to apply hydraulic principles and concepts to design and analyse water and wastewater pipe networks for a given locality. - Able to use softwares for the hydraulic design and analysis of water transmission and distribution networks (e.g. EPANET ). - Able to use softwares for the hydraulic analysis of wastewater collection systems. - Able to use softwares for the hydraulic design and analysis of stormwater collection systems. - Able to design and implement an appropriate scheme for urban stormwater management. -
Able to evaluate an existing pipe-network system for rehabilitation purposes.
Learning outcome - Competence: - Communicate effectively to stakeholders and professionals of different backgrounds. - Competent in working in a multidisciplinary engineering team. - Contribute to the development of innovative approaches in the water and sanitation sector.

Teaching methods

Pedagogic method: Lectures, group work and lab work. Some Topics will be taught in English.
Mandatory assignments: Several individual exercises well asa larger group assignment. All mandatory assignments must be approved within given deadlines to gain access to the final exam.
