Master Thesis in Health Sciences/Social Scientific Variant

The Master's thesis consists of a seminar, the written thesis and an oral presentation and examination. The Master's seminar is intended to prepare the student for the work with the thesis. The seminar is divided in two and the student is expected to present a sketch of his/her project and later to write a complete project description. Both the attendance of the seminar and the project description must be approved before the student can submit the thesis. The Master's thesis shall be an individual, scientific analysis of a research topic chosen by the student, preferably related to the mandatory or chosen courses in the Master's program. The thesis can have an empirical or theoretical approach. It would be preferred if the thesis can be related to ongoing research projects at the department. Supervision is a mandatory element, and a supervisor is appointed by the department based on an application from the student. The thesis may be submitted as a monography or as two articles. Regardless of the form, it should not exceed 80-100 pages. A Master's thesis in Norwegian language must have a short summary in English, and an English thesis must have a short summary in Norwegian. HLS3900 is the final exam in Health Science, and the students sign up for the exam on Studentweb and also on the department’s own form, available at the department (ISM). The form, along with a pdf file and 6 printed copies of the thesis must be submitted to the department’s office. (If NTNU Grafic Center is chosen, the department will cover the printing expenses for 6 copies of the thesis. If one chooses otherwise, the student must cover the expenses). A period of approximately 8 weeks must be allowed for, after the submitting of the thesis, until the final exam can be held. The thesis is to be delivered by June 1st(spring semester) or December 1st (autumn semester) the semester defined as the last semester in the student's individual Education plan. If the student submits the thesis after June 1st during the spring semester, or after December 1st during the autumn semester, the final exam will usually take place in the following semester.
