Norwegian Foreign Affairs since 1905

In a globalized world foreign policy concerns everyone on a daily basis, but what do we mean really by “foreign policy”? This course will analyze the most important security and foreign political issues facing Norway from 1905 until the present day. This includes the shaping and making of Norwegian foreign policy, how it has been influenced both from inside and outside the country’s borders and how Norway’s geopolitical position has determined both the challenges as well as their political responses. On such a basis the subject aims to develop knowledge about and ability to analyze what have been defined as Norwegian interests and values, as well as the choice and pursuit of political means.

Knowledge:

The candidate
- has knowledge about Norwegian foreign policy, including what historically has been defined as Norway's interests, values and means within foreign policy
- has thorough knowledge about challenges Norway has faced within foreign and security policy post 1905 (focusing on the first world war, the inter war period, the second world war, the cold war and post cold war.)
- has an overview of the most important historiographical debates

Skills:
The candidate
-shall assess and analyze Norwegian foreign policy interests, values and means
-shall be able to discuss the conditions for Norwegian foreign policy, and individually apply theoretical and factual knowledge to the discussion
