Topics from African Colonial History

The course concentrates on the colonial history of tropical Africa (Sub-Saharan Africa) in the period c.1870-c.1960. Focus will be on tensions between tradition and modernity, on major socio-economic and political changes, and on the interplay of global and local factors that lead to decolonisation. -- Topic in focus may vary from year to year.

The major aim is to give a basic understanding of central historical processes regarding African social changes, as well as of the relations between the European dominated state and local African people, throughout the colonial epoch.
