Economic and Social Development in Gender Perspective in Early Modern Times

We will study some aspects of the more commercialised society emerging in Europe and Norway in the 17th - 19th centuries. Increasing international commerce changed the content and organisation of production, as well as comsumption. Economic and technological changes are part of the picture, but equally important are social changes connected to this development. We will study how production was organised in new ways, how this affected gendering of labour in different societies, and how consumption changes affected different social groups and gender relations. Concepts used to analyse this development are "proto-industrialization", "industrious revolution", "consumer revolution".
