Citizenship in 20th Century Europe - Jews, Women and Gypsies East and West

Focusing on the situation of such traditionally vulnerable social and ethnocultural groups as women, Gypsies, and Jews, this course introduces students to selected aspects of modern European history and associated civil, political, and social rights. The historical experience of various periods and regions of Europe will be compared with the help of T. H. Marshall’s and Roger Brubaker’s theories of modern citizenship.
Much of our attention will be devoted to the ethnopolitics of citizenship.

This course aims to provide students with basic conceptual tools for study and an introduction to the history of modern European citizenship.
