Vikings, Christianization and the Making of Kingdoms

The point of departure for the course is 8th-century Europe, when a lively trade between northwest Europe and the Baltic began. The course will follow developments in the Carolingian empire, the Christian mission in Scandinavia, the early church organization and the establishment of bishoprics. Viking activities, trade and colonization will be studied, as well as subsequent close contacts between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Finally, the formation and development of the kingdoms that were eventually led to the formation of the nations Denmark, Norway, Island and Sweden are examined.

Knowledge of European history in the period 700-1200, with a special focus on the Nordic countries.

Lectures and exercises. One approved written assignment and a four-hour final exam.
