Humanities in the Workplace

Humanities in the Workplace focuses on the application of humanistic academic competence in a practical setting, with emphasize on the ability to work in an interdisciplinary group. Humanities in the Workplace is an approved alternative to Experts in Teamwork for Master students at the Faculty of Humanities.

KNOWLEDGE

The candidate has:

• basic knowledge about group process methods;
• practical experience with project work;
• an overview of methods to chart individual skills and competence.

SKILLS

The candidate:

• is able to plan and execute simple group projects for an external employer
• has gained skills in applying their relevant academic competence, both theoretical and methodological, on practical challenges
• can apply their knowledge to report and present a work process and its outcomes to external partners

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The candidate:

• is able to use his/her knowledge in an interdisciplinary context
• has a basic understanding of the expectations and demands of a normal workplace
• is able to communicate his/her competence in a confident manner to different partners, orally and in writing

The course activities are divided into three parts. In the semester previous to the course, students are divided into groups and assigned to a local workplace. They are responsible for arranging group meetings, and for organizing an initial meeting with their assigned employer. The second part is an intensive 3 days course, with focus on group-based processes, increasing awareness of individual competence and qualifications, and creative team process methods. The final part of the course is a three week practice period with a local business, organisation or municipal agency in Trondheim. Students must follow normal office hours during the practice period. A one-day session is held at NTNU mid-way through this period. Students must write a report on their project, and give an oral presentation at the end of the practice period.
