Academic Thinking and Presentation of Academic Work

Scientific work requires reflection, quality and an ability to cooperate in interdisciplinary groups. It is therefore necessary to know about different scientific fields, strategies of work and ways of presentation. This course, Academic thinking and presentation of academic work, aims to make students aware of general and common norms of objectivity, coherence and falsification in scientific work. Further, this course offers continued education in scientific presentation as an important method of reflection and securing of quality in academic work. The course also offers an introduction to this kind of work within specific cultures of knowledge which have their own criteria for acquiring knowledge and presentation. The course will contribute to a theoretical and critical perspective on academic and professional argumentation, and give the students a foundation enabling then to analyse and assess others' texts. Through studying professional argumentation and presentation within different scientific fields, the students will develop their own professional identity and at the same time come to a respectful understanding of others' work.

Important goals will be to develop oral and written skills in reflection and argumentation, plus creating an understanding for the processes that lead to scientific texts and for the demands that are placed on finished products.

Lectures and seminars. More on assessment: The exam consists of a take-home exam. Mandatory exercises must be approved before the student may hand in the take-home exam. The size of the exercises must be between 2-5 typed A4-pages each (line spacing 1.5). The size of the take-home exam is usually between 10-12 typed A4-pages. The paper is given a letter grade.
