About this course

Content

Automation theory, quality control system, analysis application and system configuration as well as maintenance and troubleshooting of automatic analysis instruments. Sample processing and publication of results, laboratory logistics, procedures, quality system, privacy, data security and ethical issues. Pathology. Blood sampling of patients. Professionally relevant ICT in hospital laboratories.

Organasation of the Norwegian healthcare, different healthcare professions roles, value base of our healthcare system, professional ethics, ethical reflection and central topics within public health, quality of life (incl. relationships between health, education, work and living conditions), disease, diagnosis and treatment.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the candidate should be able to:

Knowledge

  • Understand how various automated analytical instruments function
  • Have broad knowledge of analytical applications, system configuration, functional units, and systems that ensure reliable analytical results
  • Have broad knowledge of internal quality control programs for monitoring analyses related to automated analytical instruments
  • Have knowledge of relevant ICT, concerning information technology and automation systems, including laboratory information systems (LIS), middleware solutions, and control systems for analytical instruments
  • Understand the workflow of a sample through the laboratory, including ordering and reporting systems
  • Be familiar with how procedures are developed and revised in an accredited laboratory, as well as general quality assurance in hospital laboratories
  • Have knowledge of pathology
  • Have broad knowledge of correct blood sampling procedures for adults, children, and newborns
  • Understand how the healthcare system, including medical laboratories, is organized; the value base of healthcare; the roles of various professions; and key topics such as public health, quality of life (including the relationship between health, education, work, and living conditions), disease, diagnosis, and treatment

Skills

  • Perform startup, routine maintenance, and quality control of selected analytical instruments
  • Under supervision, operate analytical instruments and laboratory equipment used in various medical laboratories
  • Evaluate internal and external quality control results
  • Perform blood sampling on adult patients and communicate with patients, relatives, and other healthcare personnel during blood sampling, contributing to patient safety and predictability in the sampling situation
  • Apply professional ethical guidelines and reflect on the practice of one's own discipline and profession, as well as contribute to well-considered and collaborative teamwork

General Competence

  • Possess insight and competence in biomedical laboratory science and understand the biomedical laboratory scientist’s role in diagnostics
  • Critically assess academic content from various sources and be able to document and communicate biomedical laboratory knowledge in Norwegian
  • Have relational and communication competence and be able to work on academic issues and solutions in collaboration with fellow students and others

Teaching methods

Lectures and internal practical studies consisting of 2 laboratory courses. Written works and oral presentation. External study practice at medical laboratories. The expected number of working hours is 400 hours. Lectures: 40 hours. Laboratory training: 18 hours. External study practice: 165 hours. Self-effort: 174 hours
