Introduction to Pathology

General cytology: Diagnostic cytology of PAP smear, cytology screening program, hormonal cytology, infections and inflammation, cytopreparatory techniques.

Histology: Basic histological/histochemical techniques. Fixation and fixatives, tissue processing, parafin sections and tissue staining. Identify major organ systems morphology in microscope.

Pathology: Illness and disease, basic pathology, disease mechanisms and systematic pathology.

Knowledge - the student:

• have knowledge about disease processes in organ systems and cellular level
• have knowledge about cellular and tissues from sampling and preparation until the samples are ready for diagnosis
• have acquired knowledge and identify different epithelialcells and tissue microscopic appearance
• have knowledge of the most common disease groups and disease mechanisms
• have acquired basic and practical knowledge of pathology, as screening PAP smears and make paraffin sections

Skills - the student:

• is able to identify morphological normal tissue from the major organ systems
• is able to understand how cells and tissues together form the functional units and agencies
• is able to reflect on the relationship between organs histological structure and disease processes
• understand how and why the use of histological and cytological techniques can be helpful for diagnosis.

General competence - the student:

• is able to understand and identify normal and cells with inflammation in PAP smears
• is able to communicate about professionals topics within this field

Lectures, compulsory participation in laboratory exercises in histology and cytology.

A workload of 200 hours is expected in the course. It includes up to 60 hours of guided teaching and approximately a 20 hours laboratory course.

Practical test and laboratory course must be approved before the final exam.
