About this course
Content
The electrical infrastructure plays a major role in utilizing large-scale offshore wind energy. In this module, emphasis will be placed on how energy from offshore wind can be harvested, transferred and integrated into existing power systems in a cost-effective and reliable manner. The following topics are covered by this module:
Electrical components for energy harvesting of offshore wind:
- Mode of operation and types of technology for generators, transformers, cables, switchgear and subsea connectors
- Update on research within electrical components
System integration of wind energy:
- Planning an offshore wind farm
- Optimized electrical architecture and operational solutions for grid connection:
- Introduction of grid codes for connection of offshore wind farms
- Opportunities and challenges for offshore wind as a supplier of online services
- Market mechanisms and use of Power-to-x/sector coupling for increased flexibility
- Choice of transmission voltage, DC or AC, and system voltage, array cable from wind turbine to collection platform and export cable from collection platform to long.
- Update on research within system integration of wind energy
Learning outcomes
Acquire knowledge about architecture and planning of offshore electrical grids. Participants will also gain knowledge about how sector coupling can help increase the system's flexibility and realize a large proportion of variable offshore wind power in the energy system.
Teaching methods
Learning activities: 1. Digital lectures introducing the topics. 2. Working in groups with case assignments. 3. Presentations of group work and plenary discussion.
